I did a study abroad in Spain a few years ago- it was one of
the most amazing experiences of my life.
I feel that there is nothing more exciting and enriching in this life
than traveling the glove; especially when you get to submerse yourself in a
culture, rather than being a tourist passing through. My only regret when I did my first study
abroad is that I did not know any Spanish, which made communicating to my
amazing host family quite frustrating because I know they had a lot of amazing
things to share. I am afraid I will have
the same struggles with my host family in the D.R; although, I know a lot more
now than I did then. I have dabbled with
the language for a while and am doing this study abroad because it is very
important to me to become very fluent. I
look forward to gaining a perspective on what life is like in D.R: a poor,
Spanish speaking Caribbean island having rooted history with Spain. I know that
the division between the rich and the poor will be quite extreme and possibly
more dangerous of a city than what I am accustomed to. I am not worried though, I just know I have
to be more mindful of solo trips at night.
I am beyond excited for this upcoming experience and am really looking
forward to meeting everyone (I do not live in Utah so I haven’t attended any
meetings). Hasta la Caribe!
